Trainer, jockey plead guilty
NZPA-AFP Hong Kong Australian trainer, Roy Edwards, and jockey, David Brosnan, each pleaded guilty on Monday to four charges of cheating at Hong Kong’s races. Edwards, 60, and Brosnan, 32, appeared at the High Court on charges of obtaining advantage by wilfully influencing the outcome of five races between April and October 1985. Edwards appeared in a
wheelchair and a cardiologist informed the court that the defendant was half-paralysed by a stroke in November. In mitigation, Edwards’ counsel sought a suspended sentence for him, saying the defendant needed to undergo urgent surgery in Australia. The prosecution alleged that the pair had received rewards of some $NZ19,184 for each “fixed” race.
