Mrs Clara Beale
Mrs Clara Beale, one of Christchurch’s oldest residents, died on Monday evening. She was 102.
Mrs Beale was born in England and came to New Zealand with her family when she was six months old.
She lived in Otago for the next 70 years — first in Dunedin and later in Mosgiel.
She married when she was 21 and had five children. Her husband, Mr Frederick Beale, died in 1934. One son was killed
in World War 11. Mrs Beale moved to Christchurch 30 years ago and lived in her own house in Papanui until she was 96. She celebrated her hundredth birthday while in Nurse Maude Memorial Hospital in Papanui. Mrs Beale was a keen gardener, and for many years was an active.member of the Red Cross Society, the Ladies’ Guild, and St Giles’ Presbyterian Church, Papanui.
