Murder charges mount on Mafia

Reuter Turin A magistrate has added 21 more murder charges to a list against 150 alleged gangsters awaiting trial in connection with a Mafia war for control of heroin trafficking between Sicily and northern Italy. The 150 accused have been ordered to stand trial on charges ranging from Mafia association to drug trafficking and 39 counts of murder between 1979 and 1983. After further investigations, the magistrate in charge of the case said 21 additional killings involving the gang had come to light. The prosecution says the struggle for control of the heroin trade to the northern cities of Turin and Milan involved Mafia clans from Catania and Calabria in the south. The ring was smashed in a huge police action- two years ago. The accused include a number of professional people, customs men, and magistrates. Judicial sources said the trial would probably start next March.
