N.C.W. concern on social services

PA Wellington The National Council of Women is concerned that social services could be neglected with the setting up of State-owned corporations next April. “When economic measures are taken without evidence of regard for their social impact, the women of this country become gravely concerned,” the council said. “There are investments which yield return only in the very long term - for example, preventive health measures, prevention of land erosion. “There are services which keep society functioning, but these can be cost-effective only by reducing their social effectiveness, for instance, rural mail services.” The council told a Parliamentary select committee hearing submissions on the State-Owned Enterprises Bill that, as the country’s housekeepers, women appreciated the need for efficient use of resources.

But, “at a time when they are seeing increased costs without necessarily more income, especially for some of those in parttime employment, they are becoming increasingly wary of the flow-on effect from the user-pays?philo-sophy.” '
