U.S. leadership
Sir,—For more than 20 years, only about half of eligible adult Americans have voted in presidential and congressional elections. Obviously, many realise they have no genuine choice, anyway. Less than a third have ever voted for President Reagan and this minority support is eroding in the wake of the Iranian arms sales fiasco. As a discerning American recently wrote in a weekly magazine, widely distributed here: “President Reagan has spent more than five years telling Americans that some of their baser instincts, such as materialism, jingoism, indifference and intolerance, can be patriotic virtues. Like,4s
venerable priest, he forgives our sins. Even better, he refrains from asking us to sin no more. That is a sure path to popularity, but it is a damned poor religion for a country capable of so much better.” — Yours, etc., M. T. MOORE. December 3, 1986.
