Schoolgirl sex

Sir,—The report on the reproductive health of Hutt secondary schoolgirls is unacceptable reading without greater background knowledge. Should the Health Department authorise questionnaires about criminal activity? If the greater objective is knowing the incidence of teen-age sex, should it be a published statistic? Will we now read a series reporting greater sexual activity in “Te Atawopwop” or that “Mugwompanui” is below national activity? Are anonymous questionnaires truthfully completed? What of the encouragement to fantasise? Are we reading of penetration or less? Will reports overcome objections to sex education? Rather, parents may be alarmed more strongly to object. Better that reports reach the Ministers of Health and Education and they enforce a syllabus on reproductive health. Parents can add “caring” as their expertise. The worst results of teen-age sex are a national cost, a national regret, .but we should discourage reports on sensational and meaningless statistics. — Yours, etc., J. G. B. DOWIE.
