Daring descents of Mount Cook
PA Wellington Two adventurers made daring descents of Mount Cook yesterday.
A Christchurch mountaineer, Rob Hall, dropped from the 3764 m summit at the end of a parachute and an alpine guide, Mark Whetu, descended on skis. Mr Hall said the weather was perfect — for ski-ing. “There was no wind. It took me six hours to get off the summit and seven minutes to reach my car at the bottom.”
Mr Hall’s parachute was imported from France, where jumping from mountains is called parapente. As in hang-gliding, exponents of parapente gain lift by running along the ground. Mr Hall said the pair believed Mr Whetu’s descent was the first solo descent of the mountain on skis.
