Vegetarian diet
Sir, — Ignorance and lack of understanding are surely not reasonable grounds to mock and ridicule vegetarianism and its proponents. Few ethical vegetarians and environmentalists would argue that man’s enemies should ravage the world unchallenged, or that we can live without directly or indirectly causing the destruction of other creatures or life forms. Surely it is better to eat as low on the edible ladder as possible. Perhaps if a few more people traded “woollyminded” and “egg-headed” for enlightened and compassionate we could hope for a less aggressive and selfless society. Let us hope there is no hiccup in later life, where we are returned as a battery hen and our clucking is really in vain. — Yours, etc.,
