Snapper find sparks inquiry

PA Auckland Government officials are to try to find out why thousands of snapper washed up on west coast Coromandel Peninsula beaches at the week-end. The fish were found on Saturday morning by residents along a 15km stretch from Waitete Bay to the granite quarries on Port Jackson Road. An officer of the Ministry of Fisheries, Mr Bill King, said the Fisheries Management Division would investigate. “We only suspect it is from a fishing boat whose crew broke the .net or dumped the fish,” said Mr King,.

Photographs of the dead fish had been taken and these would be used in the inquiry. If the dumping was deliberate the Fishing Industry Board would take action.' “I think if it was done deliberately it is a criminal act,” said the board’s chairman, Mr Mark Hinchliff. Mr Hinchliff said the board had heard instances where there had been some sort of demonstration against the new inshore fisheries policy. It had been suspected that this incident was along the same lines but this would have to be investigated.
