131 die by drowning this year
A total of 131 people have drowned in New Zealand so far this year, compared with 144 in the same period last year, according to the Water Safety Council. The provisional figures for the year to October 31 were given yesterday and showed that 40 drownings occurred in rivers or streams, and 34 in the sea or at beaches. Boating mishaps accounted for 29 deaths.
