Sharks clear beaches
Three sharks seen swimming off Christchurch beaches forced swimmers out of the water for about an hour yesterday. The pilot of a light aircraft reported seeing a shark off Spencer Park about midday and another plane saw two more swimming off Waimairi Beach soon afterwards. All beaches south to New Brighton were cleared of bathers until the all-clear was given. The injured two-metre basking shark seen wallowing in shallow water off North Beach early yesterday morning was towed out to sea by a fishing boat.
