Twin caps for Tony Gillies
By
J. J. BOYLE
The Matamata horseman Tony Gillies wore twin caps in racing with success on Saturday. He rode the Busuttin-trained That’s Devotion to an easy Win in the Waimairi Handicap, then saddled Steely Dan to win the Avon City Ford Plate with impressive ease.
The Standaan gelding had moderate opposition in the 1400 m event and was backed down to long odds on, but he went close to providing an early sen-
sation. He almost fell out of the starting gate, and his rider Michael Coleman came dangerously close to being unseated. Not that it mattered when Coleman recovered.
Steely Dan was clear in a few strides, took the home turn under wraps to briefly flatter the .efforts of his closest pursuers, then powered away to win by four and a half lengths. It was a performance to widen the area of interest in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas on Wednesday.
