Talks fail

NZPA-Reuter New York

One of America’s major stockbrokers, the E. F. Hutton Group, has had talks with rival brokerage, Shearson Lehman Brothers, about a take-over, but Shearson did not make a formal offer and the talks had ended.

The merger would have created the nation’s second largest brokerage network — after Merrill Lynch.

Hutton said in a statement that Shearson made , no formal offer and that no further talks were planned. Hutton has been a subject of take-over speculation for months because its total capital, SUSI.I4 billion at January 1, is considered low for a major brokerage.
