Turner and Campbell the stars

Two individual performances were the highlights when two-day matches began in the senior women’s cricket competition on Saturday. Nicki Turner hit a fine 96 not out and the wily off-spin bowler, Catherine Campbell, took five wickets for 13 runs.

In a low-scoring game at Porritt Park, St Albans took first • innings honours over Riccarton. The ball completely dominated the bat all day. Bowlers were accurate in line and length, but batsmen failed to apply themselves and threw their wickets away cheaply. Batting first, St Albans lost its first wicket after only three runs had been scored. The best partnership of the innings was a meagre 24 between Kirsty Bond and Vicky Burtt. After that stand wickets fell regularly and the side was dismissed for 68.

Riccarton bowled tightly. Karen Gunn and Delwyn Costello were extremely economical while Rebecca Holmes enjoyed merited success with her left-arm medium-pace deliveries. Another young promising player, Katrina Withers, also picked up three

wickets Even without its star batsman, Lesley Murdoch, the target of 69 looked an easy one for Riccarton.

However, the St Albans bowlers were able to peg down the Riccarton opening batsmen so that 10 overs were bowled without a run being scored. When Karen Gunn came to the batting crease the scoring rate lifted, but like the openers she was a victim of the accurate bowling of Kirsty Bond. The off-spinners, Delwyn Brownlee and Campbell, getting considerable turn, shared the remaining wickets. Riccarton was dismissed for 52 in as many overs. At Sydenham Park, Lancaster Park reached 185 for four wickets declared at 70 overs.

The side made an excellent start with 84 being put on for the first wicket by Turner and Debbie Ford. The next wicket produced even more with another 89 runs being added before Penny Kinsella was dismissed.

Turner was unlucky to miss her century by just four runs on a ground which holds happy memories for her. It

was an innings of patience and dedication on a slow pitch that ojten kept low. Sue Brown made sure that the batsmen did not have things all their own way. She bowled 35 overs "on the trot” and took two wickets for 63 runs in a sustained effort.

In reply Sydenham had progressed steadily to 83, but losing four wickets in the process. Vivienne Cowles batted soundly to be 24 not out while Rebecca Millichip was the best of the Park bowlers, taking two for 20 off 15 overs.
