Canterbury XI denies youthful challenge
A Canterbury XI did not have matters all its own way when it met an under-20 team in a representative cricket trial at Hagley Oval yesterday. Batting first, the Canterbury XI could only muster 217 for nine off its 60 overs on a good pitch with a fast outfield. Rod Latham made a brisk 53 at exactly one run a ball, and including seven fours and one six, while Justin and David Boyle also chipped in with useful contributions.
The pick of the under-20 team bowlers was Chris Cairns, with three for 23 off his 10 overs. Three Canterbury XI players were run out. The under-20 side got off to a solid start, with Jon Preston and Dean Lund sharing a 64run stand for the first wicket. However, a penetrative spell from the Old Collegians fast bowler, Bill Lawrence, cut through the middle of the innings. After opening with four consecutive maidens, ’ taw-
rence grabbed four wickets in the space of 15 balls. An injury ended his spell which made impressive reading 9,7, 5, 4. Vaughan Brown got through 20 overs and Stu Roberts was sitting on a hattrick late in the innings. Barry Ward picked up three catches and a stumping for the Canterbury XI, which needed all but six balls of its allotted 60 overs to dismiss the under-20 team. Scores:
Canterbury XI 217/9 (R. Latham 53, J. Boyle 40, D. Boyle 34, V. Brown 27; C. Cairns 3/23) beat Canterbury under-20 138 (D. Lund 42, J. Preston 21; W. Lawrence 4/5, Brown 3/40, S. Roberts 2/33).
