Socialism
Sir, — Margaret Mayers’ comment (October 23), that “socialist countries are the opposite of democracy” shows disinformation. They sometimes limit free speech and some pressure groups, sometimes harshly. So do some Right-wing countries which have had no Reformation, Quakers or agnostics, or which will not allow Left-wing political parties. The English have burned, racked, drowned, imprisoned and diminished their dissidents throughout their history. Our “democracy” is free speech (provided the S.I.S. is not present), protest movements, pressure groups, three-yearly votes and minority governments. Soviets ask why a democracy allows unemployment or charges for a government’s services. Communists are organised in broad interest groups to nominate candidates for selection and discuss and alter impending legislation; candidates must win 51 per cent at the election. They discuss many issues openly and fiercely and can recall representatives. Sue Hunt (October 29) believes Labour has hidden, socialising intentions. Labour’s real socialists are public, impotent and unhappy. — Yours, etc.,
SUSAN TAYLOR. November 5, 1986.
