Maoris retain league cup
PA Rarotonga The New Zealand Maoris retained their Pacific Rugby League championship with a 23-6 win over Western Samoa in the grand final of the Pacific Cup tournament here last evening.
Using their forward power well, the Maoris never allowed the Samoans to run. Antelea Aiolupotea, who had been such a dangerous runner for Samoa against Tonga in the semi-final, was tackled out of the game. Adrian Shelf ord and Lome Green, in combination with the half-back, Neville Ramsey, put immense pressure on the Samoans. By half-time, when Shelford, playing in spite of a leg injury, was replaced by Mark Horo, the paver of Samoa's tackling had diminished markedly.
However, the entire Maori side continued its push forward and newcomers like Pei Muru, Dean Haggie, James Paikea and George Huriwai all distinguished themselves. The Samoans, with a sprinkling of New Zealand based players among their ranks, also contribued to the high standard of play. Paddy Tuimavave, Fou Soiomona, Dave Sefuiva, Paul Okesene, Kennedy Taogaga and Steve Kaiser all played above their New Zealand form. Scores:
New Zealand Maoris 23 (Mike Kuiti. Dean Haggie, Neville Ramsey, George Huriwai tries; Garry Mercer 3 conv.; Ramsey, drop goal). Western Samoa 6 (Kennedy try’; Tea Rosati, conversion). 1
