Papanui consolidated third place on the premier men’s softball points table with a narrow 1-0 victory over Suburbs at Papanui Domain last evening. It was Papanui’s third win in its last four games. The only run came in the top of the seventh innings when Rennie Tai hit safely to left field and advanced around the bases on two wild pitches and then a sacrifice fly ball by Roger Hutton. Suburbs batted disappointingly, managing only two hits
off the pitching of Colin Sutherland who took seven strike-outs. His counterpart, Marty Grant, grabbed nine strike-outs and conceded three hits.
In an absorbing game at Bumside High School Richmond shaded Merivale, 4-3, in eight innings. It was Richmond’s second triumph in a tiebreaker in the space of five days. Points: Bumside 8, United 8, Papanui 6, Richmond 4, Suburbs 2, Merivale 0. a
