Care and safety on Guy Fawkes
Caution and safety will be the words to remember next week when November 5 comes around again. It’s Guy Fawkes day again. While it is a fun time and time for celebration —' with crackers, bonfires and “guys” — it is a time to take care. Too many young New Zealanders have been hurt and maimed for life by a lack of caution and care with fireworks on November 5. The first “guy” was
Guy Fawkes, a Catholic man who tried to blow up the English Parliament and the Protestant King, James 1, on November 5, 1605, in times when Protestants and Catholics were often enemies. Information about the plot, called “the gunpowder plot,” was leaked to the King before ’ it could be carried out, and Guy Fawkes and his fellow plotters were executed. Have a careful Guy Fawke’s celebration next week!
