Mailbox fire begun by children
Children threw fire crackers into a mailbox at the New Brighton Post Office on Sunday afternoon, starting a fire which destroyed or damaged about 200 letters. The fire, which started about 5 p.m., was stopped from spreading by an aluminium sheet which surrounded the mailbox, said 'the acting Postmaster, Mr Arthur Regan. The letters affected were those that had been posted in the Christchurch metropolitan mailbox from 11.30 a.m. on Saturday to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Mr Regan said that addresses could be read on about 65 letters and they had been sent on. The New Brighton police said that two children were seen running from the Post Office before the fire started.
