Beauty contest plain sailing?

By

MARGARET BAKER

Perth is not the only place that will sport KZ7’s colours next month — “Miss New Zealand,” Lynda McManus, will parade them on the “Miss World” stage in London. The KZ7’s official white, blue and gold crew uniform will be Miss McManus’s national costume for the 1986 international beauty contest on November 13. “It seemed like the right thing to wear for New Zealand at the moment,” she said in Christchurch yesterday. She is making her final arrangements before leaving for the contest on Friday. Her last few weeks have been spent “going to the gym and doing lots of promotions” as well as organising her wardrobe and planning modelling assignments overseas after the contest — if she does not win. “I haven’t really thought about winning. It would be amazing — but I just really want to enjoy myself and have a good time.” The contest will officially begin on November 2 in Hong Kong, where the swimsuit parades will be filmed, and then will move to London a week later. The next two weeks will be spent rehearsing for the contest, making charity appearances, and attending formal and informal functions. Ms Maree Pannell, director of the Spotlight Model Agency, said the contest was extremely hard work and not at all “just sitting round looking pretty.” “The girls have to be seen to be loving it — that is how the judges sort them out. If they can’t handle two weeks they will never handle a year.” She said the contest was a good chance to make contacts in the modelling world and to get international exposure. “But one of the biggest gains is the self-esteem and confidence the contestants gain. If helps them a lot in their careers.” Miss McManus, aged 19, said she had gained a lot of confidence since becoming “Miss New Zealand” in February. “I will get ‘Miss World’ over with first and then I have plans to work in Japan and the States.” She has no idea what her chances for the contest are, but is determined to do her best and enjoy it:
