Christchurch wins again

The champion print award of the New Zealand Professional Photographers’ Association went for the second year running to Christchurch photographer Richard Poole. The announcement was made at the recent annual convention of the association in Wellington, where Mr Poole was also' made an' Associate of the N.Z.P.P.A. He gained the award in two years, the maximum allowable being four years. ' Until now Mr Poole has worked out of the studio

of Harry Ruffell, but has started construction of his own headquarters in Shirley. His journey to being a professional photographer in private practice was circuitous. He started work as an orthopaedic technician in Palmerston North, became a newspaper photographer in Timaru and returned to Palmerston as chief photographer of the “Manawatu Evening Standard.” He went back into footwear first in England and then in Tasmania, where he re-

designed orthopaedic styles. Back in New Zealand, he worked for seven years for Green and Hahn Photography, Ltd, in Christchurch before going to Mr Ruffell’s. He has raced motorbikes, and builds model steam-locomo-tives. The photograph which won him the national print award was shown in “The Press” when it won the portrait section of the competition a few months ago.
