Indonesia

Sir, —Recent items on Indonesia show how propaganda works in the West. On October 10 it was reported that some “communists found guilty of being in a disastrous coup attempt in 1965 have been executed.” In fact, the communist coup attempt was a C.I.A. fabrication. A former C.I.A. agent, Ralph McGehee, reveals in “Deadly Deceits” (despite C.1.A.-enforced deletions) how the agency falsely portrayed the coup attempt as "communist.” Indeed, others like Peter Dale Scott (“Pacific Affairs,” vol. 58, No. 2, summer 1985) demonstrate that even the coup attempt was manipulated from the inside by Suharto and the C.I.A. This coup attempt was the excuse for the planned systematic murder of communist and other groups. The murdered dead number possibly over a million, making Suharto a bigger mass murderer than the execrated Pol Pot. Today, the Western media still repeat C.I.A. disinformation and build up Suharto’s image (e.g. September 18) while the murders continue. — Yours, etc.,
