Job security

Sir, —Mr Lange is promising “that no forestry worker will be laid off during the transition to the new Forestry Corporation” (October 15). Last time it was “that no competent farmer would be forced off his farm.” While addressing a meeting at Hornby High School and confronted with the fact that many farmers were being forced off, and asked to define a “competent farmer,” Mr Lange replied that he did not consider competent anyone who had borrowed money or bought land in the last three years. As New Zealand’s biggest borrower, does that definition make Roger Douglas our most incompetent citizen? Forestry workers should beware of big promises from big politicians with peculiar senses of humour. Mr Lange’s denial of a March 31 deadline probably means the lay-offs will begin on April 1. Nice one, Dave. — Yours, etc.,

FRED BULL. Sheffield, October 18, 1986.
