The Ranfurly Shield returned to Canterbury last evening. Shown displaying the prized rugby trophy at the opening of the Travel Agents’ Association convention at the Christchurch Town Hall last evening is Don Hayes, captain of the Canterbury team throughout its long defence of the Shield. Close by, however, was the veteran Auckland forward, Andy Haden, to ensure that the shield is returned to Auckland. The organisers of the convention had said they would have the Ranfurly Shield on show when they sent out their invitations some time ago. Canterbury’s challenge was unsuccessful, but the organisers persuaded Haden to bring the Shield south so that they could keep their promise.
