Law partner appointed judge

A senior partner in the Christchurch law firm of Wynn Williams and Company, Mr Andrew Tipping, has been appointed a High Court judge. The Attorney-General, Mr Palmer, said yesterday that the appointment was as a temporary judge, to be made permanent when the next vacancy occurred. He will sit in Christchurch, after an initial period on circuit. Mr Tipping has been a partner in Wynn Williams since 1967 and is the firm’s senior common law partner. He was educated at Christ’s College and graduated from the University of Canterbury in 1966 with the degrees of B.A. and L.L.M. (Hons). In that year, he was

awarded the Canterbury District Law Society gold medal and also the Timothy Cleary Memorial Prize. Mr Tipping was a member of the society council from 1976 to 1984, becoming its president in 1984. He served also on the New Zealand Law Society’s council from 1982 to 1984 and was a member of the executive committee in 1984. Mr Tipping became a member of the society’s courts and tribunals committee in 1981, and its chairman in 1985. He has been a tutor at the University of Canterbury in evidence and commercial law and holds the post of moderator for the law schools in the law of torts.
