France wants more babies

NZPA-Reuter Paris The French Government has proposed new incentives to encourage couples to have more children and boost the birthrate, a traditional concern since Germany invaded France in World War I. The measures, soon to go to Parliament, will cost the State an extra six billion francs a year. Mothers who stay at home to look after a third child will have a monthly payment of 1500 francs increased to 2400 francs. Working parents who hire a baby-sitter to look after a child under three will be exempt from up to 2000 francs worth of monthly social security contributions.
