Nostalgic trip
Sir,—Last Friday I had the wonderful experience of taking four elderly residents on the “Monteith Express.” One gentleman had to be carried on board, the others had to be assisted by two people. From the very moment we arrived at Christchurch Railway Station the courtesy and help we received from Railway staff and volunteers cannot be too highly spoken of. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed themselves, reliving old memories. The excited look on their faces as they peered out the windows to wave to bystanders as the train puffed its way out of the station was in itself a therapy for these people, many of whom had not been on a train for 40 years or more. On behalf of our residents a very big “thank you” to the organisers for including us, and to N.Z.R. for the most courteous way you handled this mammoth task. — Yours, etc., JUDY COOPER, Parklands Private Hospital. October 9, 1986.
