Sir,—Your communist-in-spired correspondents fail to understand why the free nations of the world fear the Soviet Union. No country has yet evolved the perfect government, but democracy is the best available. The circle of countries around Russia prevent Russian aggression by collective agreement. They do not want American bases and weapons, but they are not fortunate islands like New Zealand. They have that massive army on their borders. Writers revile South Africa while extolling Russia, where thousands of political prisoners suffer imprisonment, mostly for the crime of distributing pamphlets. The agitators of Soweto would get harsh punishment there. Stalin would have shot them. — Yours, etc., J. SIMMONDS. September 10, 1986.
