Futures firm and active except wool
“The New Zealand dollar was very volatile yesterday, starting at 4660 and strengthening a whole cent during the day,” said Mr Geoff McDonnell, of Mair Astley Futures. This led to an active United States dollar futures contract, with the general belief that the New Zealand dollar will continue to strengthen. This belief was also evident in the wool futures contract, he said. The big rises of Wednesday were reversed yesterday as traders believed that the New Zealand dollar had bottomed out, and across the board contracts were 4c to 5c below Wednesday’s highs. Of the tyvo interest rate contracts, PCPs were flat, but with very good support levels. There was aggressive buying in the Government Stock contract on the view that the next tender will attract overseas interest and that yields are expected to be lower than the previous tender, Mr McDonnell said.
