N.Z. snooker titles
PA Hamilton Two of New Zealand’s three world championship representatives yesterday made it through to post-section play of the Lion Brown national snooker championships. The defending champion, Peter De Groot, of Canterbury, and a fellow world championship representative, Harry Haenga, of Wellington, whom he beat in last year’s national final, both won their sections to qualify. New Zealand's third representative at next month’s world champs in Invercargill, Otago’s Roy Young, failed to finish in the top two of his section and did not qualify. Others to miss out included the North Island -champion, Peter Mischefski, of Taranaki, and the South Island champion, Stan Massey, of Canterbury, while last week’s winner of the billiards title, Canterbury’s Brian Kirkness, was also unsuccessful in making the top 16 despite having only one loss in section play. Kirkness was the
unlucky one in a countback after a three-way tie for first place in his section with Wellington’s Steve Robertson and Tony Gorton, of Counties. Post section qualifers were drawn into four sections of four to play another roundrobin series from which the top two from each section will contest tonight’s quarterfinals. Qualifers:— Section one: Jack Lemon (Wellington), Peter Hourigan (Waikato), Winston Hill (Waikato), Darcy Boyce (Waikato). Section two: Dave Meredith (Canterbury), Barry Moore (Auckland), Roger Stevens (Auckland), Tony Gorton (Counties). Section three: Peter de Groot (Canterbury), Laurie Glozier (Auckland), Russell White (Counties), Terry Collins (Bay of Plenty). Section four: Harry Haenga (Wellington), Steve Robertson (Wellington), Bob Karaitiana (Waikato), Ricky Keepa (Bay of Plenty)..
