Essex clinches county title
NZPA-Reuter London Essex, under its new captain, Graham Gooch, clinched the English county cricket championship for the third time in four years yesterday, again frustrating Nottinghamshire’s bid for a title. Essex needed three further points to take the championship and collected them on the opening day of its penultimate match, ironically against Nottinghamshire, the only other side with a slender chance of seizing the crown. Appropriately, Gooch took the wicket that secured the third point with his medium pacers, having his England team-mate and wicketkeeper, Bruce French, caught behind. That lifted Essex’s points tally to 284, a total Not-' tinghamshire could equal, but Gooch’s team was guaranteed finishing top by virtue of its 10 wins. Nottinghamshire’s maximum was nine. Nottinghamshire has been upstaged by Essex in the last two seasons, losing the 1985 Nat West 60-overs final by one run, while Essex took the 1984 county championship because Nottinghamshire lost to Somerset by four runs in the final game. Essex, which also won the championship in 1984, triumphed again essentially on its bowling strength. The pacemen, John Lever and Neil Foster, were consistently effective, all-rounder Derek Pringle shone early in the season, and the left-arm spinner, John Childs, was a match-winner last month. Close of play scores yesterday were.— At Trent Bridge: Nottinghamshire 267 in 82.1 overs (C. Broad 120, N. Foster four for 77, J. Lever five for 87). Essex 92 for two in 24 overs. At Old Trafford: Lancashire 171 in 62.4 overs (N. Fairbrother 65, V. Marks four for 41). Somerset 145 for three in 44 overs (P. Bail 55). At Hove: Hampshire 385 for seven declared in 101 overs (G. Greenidge 126, N. Cowley 65 not out, V. Terry 48). Sussex 44 for one in 10 overs.
At Worcester: Glamorgan 356 for five (H. Morris 114, G. Homes 107, A. Jones 44) v Worcestershire.
At Scarborough: Yorkshire 352 for seven (J. Love 109, G. Boycott 61, P. Carrick 46) v Northamptonshire.
