Lambs will be graded hoggets
PA Wellington Lambs born in the spring of 1985 would be graded as hoggets if they are slaughtered after September 30, the Meat Board said. Farmers and processors can make contracts to supply suitable lambs after the September cutoff date if the lambs are for specific marketing purposes. Fanners were advised to secure contracts with processors now if they intended carrying lambs forward, the board said. However, any animals which have two permanent incisors in wear would be graded as hoggets regardless of any contractual arrangements. The board said farmers who could not secure a suitable contract were advised to arrange for lambs to be slaughtered by the end of September.
