Mike O’Callaghan and Alison Smith display the medals they won in the Far East and South Pacific Disabled Games in Indonesia last week. A team of six was sent
from the New Zealand Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Federation to compete against about 1000 other handicapped athletes. The New Zealand team brought home
16 gold medals, three silvers. and three bronzes. O’Callaghan, the New Zealand team captain, won a gold medal in the 800 m and silver medals in the 1500 m and
5000 m events. Ms Smith won four gold medals in the air rifle prone, standing, kneeling, and aggregate events. Every member of the team came home with a medal.
