Council has four unwanted horses
PA Tauranga Four runaway horses will be slaughtered by the Mount Maunganui Borough Council at the end of this week unless members of the public are prepared to offer them good homes. Council staff found six horses “panicked and running in a frenzy” along the railway lines near the Te Maunga intersection about a month ago. Efforts to find the owner have failed. Mount Maunganui’s assistant Town Clerk, Mr Glen Snelgrove, said the council had begun advertising for anyone interested in buying the horses but so far only two had been sold. “One horse sold for $5O and another for $40,” he told the council’s works and recreation committee. Although reluctant to kill the horses, one of which is a mare in foal, Mr Snelgrove said the council could not afford to keep the horses indefinitely. “I do not like disposing of any animal, and if there is any way round this we will take it,” he said.
