N.Z. golfers perforin well

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney New Zealand’s golfers will earn a second reward if they turn in consistent work in the final round of the Australian amateur championships at Adelaide today. Apart from championship places, they are playing for one of the 32 places in the Australian matchplay cham- ’ pionship which begins in the South Australian capital on Friday. Glen Goldfinch, Philip Aitken, Brent Paterson and David Jackson are all looking good for the top 32 in the present tournament after solid rounds at the Glenelg course yesterday, but Terry Cochrane had a horror day with his putting and will have to pull something out of the
box if he is to get a start at the week-end. Today the amateur strokeplay champs switch to Glenelg’s sister course at Kooyonga, and the New Zealand manager, Goldie Wardell, said this afternoon that the target for making the week-end tournament 32 would be a final score of about 150-151. Goldfinch at least is looking good for that with a par round yesterday of 72, followed by Aitken with 73, Paterson with 75 and Jackson on 76, while Cochrane was struggling on 79. Goldfinch was the model of consistency yesterday, knocking two birdies and two bogeys to finish the best of the Kiwis, and Aitken turned in a solid finish with birdies on the sixteenth and seventh for his 73.
