Good response to GST

Canterbury businesses have responded well to the call to register for goods and services tax. The Christchurch chief examiner of the GST processing section, Mr Tony Black, said many registrations were still being processed, but it was expected that between 18,000 and 20,000 businesses would register in the region.

He said about 3000 people had not replied to the department’s request for them to register, but it was likely most of these people did not have to. "We have still got a few stragglers coming in, but it has been about what we were expecting,” Mr Black said. Taxation officials in Wellington say they have had a good response from businesses registering for

GST. The Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Mr Graham Holland, said the department expected the final number of registrations to be about 220,000 to 230,000. So far, it had received 212,000 responses. All businesses have to register for GST before the starting date of October 1.
