Champagne send-off for Bromley smell planned
Bad smells from the Bromley sewerage works are likely to be given a champagne send-off next week. The Christchurch Drainage Board’s operations and services committee was told yesterday that the cover for the No. 1 trickling filter at the works would be finished npvf wppk It is hoped the biofilter will reduce the odour problems which have plagued residents in parts of Christchurch for 15 years. A board member, Mr Wright, told the commit-
tee he planned to christen the new filter cover with a bottle of champagne. At previous meetings Mr Wright had criticised delays in solving the odour problem. He said he planned to get up on top of the filter cover with’ a bottle of champagne when the cover was finished. The board’s engineer, Mr Peter Hunt, said smoke tests to make sure there were no leaks in the cover would start at the end of next week. After these were finished the next stage would involve getting the motors
and fans running to pump the odour into the ground. C.F.M. waste The Canterbury Frozen Meat Company might soon be discharging waste into the Belfast sewerage system. The committee resolved that the board should agree to accept domestic waste from the company’s Belfast and Canterbury works into the Belfast sewerage system. In a report to the board, Mr Hunt said C.F.M. had been using septic tanks and field tiles to dispose of its domestic waste. “The operation of these septic tanks and field tiles has been associated with current local pollution problems and it is desirable that other disposal methods be used,” the report said. It was suggested that the wastes — septic tank effluent — should be permitted in the Belfast system after a 12-month trial period. If this was not successful the company would remove the septic tanks and provide normal connections to the system.
