Union leader backs Mr Knox

By

PATRICIA HERBERT

in Wellington

The Combined State Unions yesterday accused the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, of trying to whip up anti-union sentiment with emotional arguments and personality attacks.

The chairman of the C.S.U., Mr Colin Hicks, delivered the criticism in support of the Federation of Labour and its presi-

dent, Mr Jim Knox. Rejecting the Prime Minister’s attacks on Mr Knox, he said he did not believe the “campaign of personal vilification” was designed to solve the dispute at Kawerau but instead to “achieve crass political aims and to deflect public attention from what the Government is up to.”

He called on Mr Lange to "take stock and get a

hold on himself." He said Mr Lange was “setting the scene for a potentially disruptive breakdown in industrial relations.” It was time for Mr Lange to act like a leader and not like a showman. “He is playing with people’s livelihoods and must face up to his responsibilities,” Mr Hicks said.
