Karpov resigns
NZPA-Reuter Leningrad The challenger, Anatoly Karpov, yesterday resigned the fourteenth game of his world chess championship match against the title-holder, Gary Kasparov. The result brought the score in the 24-game series to 8-6 in favour of Kasparov, who now needs
only four points from the remaining 10 games to retain his crown. Many experts had expected Karpov to continue play in the fourteenth game yesterday but overnight analysis apparently convinced his camp that the position was hopeless, with Kasparov about to win a vital pawn.
