Govt to introduce revised passport
PA Wellington The Government plans to introduce a new passport with “increased security features” to prevent forgery, according to a report tabled in Parliament. The Department of Internal Affairs annual report also said the department was preparing to fully computerise the passport issuing system, which processes about 150,000 passports, 14,000 endorsements, and 6000 reissues a year.
The report said the new passport would conform to standards recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. The department investigates between 50 and 60 passport applications each year that may be fraudulent — applied for by producing documents relating to other people — and “a number” of prosecutions have been made. Helped by the police, it is investigating ways of detecting these fraudulent applications.
