Lakes storage high
PA Timaru Water levels in the South Island hydro lakes are the highest for 10 years in spite of peak power generation. Mr J. P. Robinson, the district manager for the Electricity Division in Dunedin, said the South Island system had been run hard all winter, but it was still left with 61 per cent storage because of more rain in the high country than in past years. For the same period (early September) in previous years, the next highest the storage had been was 42 per cent, with the lowest being 35 per cent Mr Robinson said the maximum generation was being continued with as much electricity as possible being fed to the North Island to reduce the use of thermal, coal, and oil-fired stations.
