Study premature, says councillor
The team appointed to examine options for electricity distribution restructuring will not be effective and the study is premature, says the chairman of the Riccarton Borough Council’s electricity committee, Cr Peter O’Meeghan.
Any study of existing supply authorities had little relevance because of imminent changes linked to deregulation of the electricity industry, he said. New market forces
would effect the workings of each supply authority and would cause changes in organisation and management. “At best the team’s findings could only be construed as conjecture,” said Cr O’Meeghan. Because of a “perceived bias towards artificial amalgamation” of supply authorities, the study would not help efforts from all parts of the industry to succeed when new regulations were introduced, he said.
