Scholar gains award
A Christchurch man, Mr Michael Harlow, has won the 1986 New Zealand First Book of Prose Award. Mr Harlow’s book “Take a Risk, Trust Your Language, Make a Poem,” was published by Christchurch Teachers’ College in 1985. Mr Harlow was then a senior lecturer in English at the College. He is now studying in France on a Katherine Mansfield Scholarship. There were 10 entries ■j for the award, which is worth $lOO. The judge, Mr Russell Haley, said Mr Harlow’s book was “a splendidly innovative text for anyone who teaches the writing of poetry.” He said it was "an outstandingly clear winner.” The 1986 New Zealand Best First Book of Poetry Award went to Ms Marina ! Makarova, of Hamilton, j for her book, “For Yester-
day.” , The awards are administered by P.E.N., the international organisation of poets, playwrights, editors, essayists and novelists.
