Solvent abuse petition
A Christchurch-based petition to have solvent abuse made illegal is off to a flying start. “My phone has been ringing non-stop. It is quite encouraging,” said one of the organisers of the petition, Mrs Kath Sweetman. Mrs Sweetman decided to try to do something to have solvent abuse outlawed after Michael Smith, aged 13, the son of a friend, died last month with his head in a tin of petrol. One of her callers yes-
terday was a mother whose 16-year-old daughter had experimented with glue-sniffing, but had promised her mother that she had now given the habit up. “That is just what Michael told his mother,” said Mrs Sweetman. More than 3000 copies of the petition have been printed. The petition will be collected on October 17 so that it can be presented while Parliament is sitting.
