Barusha the beat at New Plymouth today

Special correspondent New Plymouth Lance O’Sullivan on Work Of Art and Tony Allan on Barusha look set to battle it out for the major honours in the Perfume Gallerie Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting at New Plymouth today. On recent form Barusha is the one to beat. He looked in top form at Hawera in July when he imposed the first defeat on the outstanding Fending galloper, Gatcombe’s Pride. Since then he has run third, then won again at Te Awamutu last Friday. Today’s distance, 1600 m, is his best distance

and with the services of Tony Allan he should be hard to beat

Work Of Art has disappointed her supporters in her last two starts. However, her form before that was first-class and she still warrants a further chance.

Nova Lady has been running fair races and on her home track could, notch a win without too much surprise. Infantry is one to watch, although he is having his first race since April. In the second leg, the Radio Taranaki Handicap, Super Roo is selected to continue his fine form. The New Plymouthtrained five-year-old,

which has been patiently handled by Kevin Dravitzkl, seems to race best fresh. Nitty Gritty and Can Lah are both leading prospects on the strength of recent performances. Nitty Gritty was second to Gatcombe’s Pride at Foxton last month at his last start. Can Lah has won her last two races. She scored by seven lengths at Wanganui on July 1 and won again, by four lengths, on the same course several weeks later. Fortune Road, Tonephil and Ave Regina are others in with prospects while Orateen has raced well fresh before.
