San Francisco A perforated eardrum forced the Australian soprano, Joan Sutherland, to cancel yesterday’s gala performance with Luciano Pavarotti. But the show did go on with Pavarotti singing a programme of arias and duets with the American soprano, Madelyn Renee. The silver jubilee concert marked the twentyfifth anniversaries of Miss Sutherland’s American recital debut and of Pavarotti’s professional operatic debut in Italy. Miss Sutherland, who developed an ear infection while in Hawaii, suffered a perforated eardrum when her plane landed at San Francisco International Airport, said a San Francisco opera spokesman, Scott Horton.
