Birkenhead candidate
PA Auckland Ms Jenny Kirk, aged 41. a former journalist, has been confirmed as the Labour Party candidate for the North Shore seat of Birkenhead. She was the only nomination for the electorate which National has held since 1975.
Earlier in the month the former National Party leader, Mr Jim McLay, announced he would not contest the seat again, as he was quitting politics. Ms Kirk, for the last 18 months electorate assistant in the neighbouring seat of Glenfield, has two teen-age sons.
