Passers-by watch as police attacked

PA Wellington Passers-by stood and watched while two constables were attacked by four men using beer cans, a guitar, and steel-capped boots in Wellington last evening, the police said. Constable Sarah Stirling, aged 25, and Constable Parry O’Brien, aged 23, were hit over the head repeatedly with the

guitar, which was broken in the fracas. Mr O’Brien was kicked in the head. Both constables needed hospital treatment. "They were like rabid dogs,” Ms Stirling said. "I have been in the job for 414 years, I have worked in team policing, but I have never experienced that sort of savage behaviour before.”
