Factory fire
A fireman suffering from smoke inhalation was taken to hospital after fighting a fire in a Christchurch plastics factory yesterday. He was discharged soon after and sent home to recover.
The fire, which started in the switchboard at Alex Harvey Industries, Ltd, in Shands Road about midday, caused only minor damage, but a lot of smoke and toxic fumes, said a Fire Service spokesman. Firemen wore special gear and breathing apparatus for protection. It seemed that the fire, which did not appear suspicious, spread through the wall space to a mezzanine floor and the roof, he said.
